Intermittent "Local only", how to fix it ?
Access: "Local and Internet" goes to "Local only" System will be running fine for many hours, then internet connectivity is lost. It may comeback shortly, or it may stay down for a long time. Connection is through cable ISP, not wireless.

Does all internet access cease to work ? Can you for example use a secure connection (https://) to your bank successfully, but then regular http to some other site doesn't work. Can you establish a VPN connection to your office successfully in this state?Does Windows Update work when you are in this state? Can you ping/tracert to sites?I ask because the above behavior is what I was experiencing (for the first time) this morning. All the secure/VPN stuff was working; only HTTP to regular sites wouldn't connect.

Yes, have the same problem with an up-to-date Windows Vista Home Premium and an up-to-dateLinksys WRT300N -version 1.03- wireless router. The other 2 computers running XP I havework perfect via wireless. I think it is a software related problem sinceit won't lose the whole connection (local access to server seems to be perfect when it happens). It helps to reset/renewthe IP and adapter, but justfor a few minutes. Lately, I just plug a direct cable from the ethernet switch in the router to my laptop. Anyone with a similar annoyance could help? Thanks in advance

I wonder if anyone ever found a solution to this problem. I have a fully patched system running Vista Home Premium. This problem started about a month ago. At first, the internet connection (ethernet) would go to local only and then would go back to local and internet. Now, once it goes to local only it stays there until I reboot. This system also has a wireless adapter. I've tried disabling the ethernet adapter and enabling the wireless adapter. When the wireless adapter connects to my router it says local only as well. Also, if I shutdown or restart the system the system locks up at the "logging off" step. I have to hold the power button to power off and back on. Once the system restarts, everything is fine until the problem happens again. BTW - I've tried changing cables and ports on my router. Other systems and devices on my network never lose connection.

I reported this issue to Microsoft Vista SP1Help And Support. This is their answer: Quote: Based on my experience, this issue is probably caused by the ISP, not the client side issue. At this point, I recommend contacting the ISP for more information. Unquote.

I have the problem as well. A little frustrated as I've tried several supposed fixes and I still have the problem. I doubt though that the problem is exclusively the ISP as it is limited to my Vista computers... as: I have two computers sitting side by side. One runs vista, 4 GHz,andcat5 to the router It's a powerful machine thatlooks sweet and new and shines with pride. But with "Unidentified network" and "Access: Local" I'm a real doubter. The other machine is older than dirt Runs XP at 1 GHz, cat5, and is so slow that it hurts. But while theVista computer sits there doing a boat anchor imitation The XP machine accesses the Internet withoutlimitation. Looks to me that this is a Vista issue. Can anyone from Microsoft provide a patch for this issue? Thanks. Bry

I changed autotuninglevel to netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled As I understand it, this brings Vista IP behavior back to more in line with XP IP behavior. On my PC it does not eliminate the problem but it does improve the situation. The timeout to recover is reduced noticeably.

Hi everyone... It's been a while since I posted this problem. It turns out that the problem solved when I installed the SP1. It seems to be a problem with Vista software rather than my ISP... Luckily they consider to patch/solve this issue with my TOSHIBA Satellite A215 on this Service Pack, I feel I winthe Lotto or something . Thanks to everyone who helped and good luck to those still not getting the solution. I hope my solution work for you all.

Driver for adapter is out of date on HP & Microsoft Update Pages. Finally found program that is free to use here is web site http://www.innovative-sol.com/drivermax/ for those with local only connection on wireless. Fixed my local only problem. I would just make sure you get only digitally signed drivers they worked best for me. I have tried every thing in almost every blog and help sites assists I have read for the last month with no luck. Removed all my security & anti virus even used the special removal tools no luck till I found this free Driver Program. Give it a try and Good luck to everyone else with this same problem.
